Did you move the PST file to your hard drive and remove its read only
attribute? Do not import the file, open it. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "patpend" wrote in message ... i want to copy my contacts in outlook to another computer. i've followed all the directions i can find. i've made a pst file of the contacts and copied it to a cd but when i try to import the data into the other computer, i get an error message saying that the file is not a pst file. why is it not recognizing it as a pst file? what can i do? |

Have you gotten this to work yet? I tried Russ' advice & it hasn't worked.
I get errors including "...pst is not compatible with this version of the Personal Foldres information service. Contact your Administrator". Sounds like a different problem to me. You need to post details if you need
help. You appear to have created an PST file in Outlook 2003 format that you are trying to open in an earlier version. List the exact steps you used and your versions. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "GJ" wrote in message ... Have you gotten this to work yet? I tried Russ' advice & it hasn't worked. You got it. i created the PST file in 2003, and am trying to open it in 2000.
To move a pst file like this before (don't remember which version to which version), I would change the name of the default pst (usually mailbox.pst) so that when Outlook opened it would ask me where the pst file is. I'd then direct Outlook to the file I wanted to use. Will this work once I figure out the compatibility issues? GJ "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote: Sounds like a different problem to me. import them in 2000. Thanks. "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote: Sounds like a different problem to me. You need to post details if you need help. No. The only program that can access this file is Outlook 2003. If you
wanted a PST file that is compatible with earlier versions you would have had to create a new PST file in "Outlook 97-2002" format while in Outlook 2003. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "GJ" wrote in message news You got it. i created the PST file in 2003, and am trying to open it in 2000. OK, I've created the new PST in 97-2002 format. How do I dump my data in

Any of the usual methods should be fine:

I'm a little confused. The new pst file I created in the 97-2002 format is
sitting in my desktop, seemingly without the contents of my personal folders (since I only created a new file, but there was no "save" or "copy" function in the wizard). If I export my personal folders into a PST, it doesn't give me the option to export it in the 97-2002 format. This seems like 2 halves that I have to now put together. When you say "drag & drop", "Copy&paste", etc, am I doing this all within Outlook? I notice that a new "personal folders" icon is added to the bottom of my folder list when I create a data file in 97-2002 format. Is there a place in Outlook help that addresses this situation? Thanks so much for the help on this...
