Default Document Map and Outline View Problems

All of a sudden, all my Word documents open in outline view, regardless of
how they are saved. Normally I use print layout view.

At about the same time, I developed a problem in Document Map. I should be
able to get a pull-down menu with a right mouse click or with Shift-F10. The
mouse click no longer works, but Shift-F10 is still OK. Any thoughts? Did I
reset some key option without knowing it? Thanks in advance. Ted

Default Document Map and Outline View Problems

Both issues are resolved.
Documents no longer open in outline view. Bad behavior stopped for unknown
reason.
Document map issue resolved when I learned right click drop down menu
requires cursor to be in blank area of document map, and not on top of a
listed heading

Note that Word saves the view with a document. The view in which new, blank
documents open depends on the settings of normal.dot (normal.dotm if you are
using Word 2007). See http://word.mvps.org/faqs/general/SaveViewAndZoom.htm.

Default Document Map and Outline View Problems

But AFAIK, it's not possible to save a document in outline view, which is
what makes this so odd.

I can certainly save a document in Outline view and have it open in that
view again.

In Word 2007, perhaps the "Allow opening a document in Draft view" option
makes a difference (though I realize it shouldn't, just because it refers to
Draft view, not Outline view)?

I'm probably mistaken, then (haven't actually tried it). For some reason I
thought it was "received knowledge" that you couldn't save in Outline view.
