how do I install saved data files on a DVD into my MS Word?

I just purchased a new computer (with WN XP Prof) and do not know how to
download my data files stored on a DVD into my MS Word program. Can you give
me the steps to do this?
Consider my computer experience: beginner

Create a new folder on the hard disk and using Windows explorer, copy the
files to that folder. Then you FileOpen in Word to open the files.
