Default Disconnect Problems with Sending Email

Hi folks!

Initial Setup:
I had a Windows 2000 and Outlook 2000 setup using a 56k modem for dialup.
Problem:
Receiving mail including large attachments works fine.
If I use Word as the email editor and/or try sending attachments the sending
hangs at various % (depending on the no of attachments) and then eventually
(after about 30 secs or so) disconnects the dialup connection and then
reports errors (obviously!)
As I said I can send normal emails without any problems. I can also download
(havent tried uploading) files with no problems.

2nd Stup:
The PC has been rebuilt using Windows XP and Outlook 2002 with same modem
for dialup.
Problem:
Exactly the same as before.

Are there any known problems in this area? My next step is to start looking
at hardware ie the modem, although it is a relatively new modem and I had
disconnection (I assumed line dropout problems) with a previous modem I had,
prompting me to replace the modem. Can a new one fail so quickly? and only
in one direction - sending?

I can browse the web without problems, and download files concurrently.

CHeers expectantly....
Jeff

Sounds suspiciously like an anti-virus program getting in the way. Do you
have an anti-virus program scanning outgoing email? If so, disable that
scan (which may require uninstalling that program and then reinstalling
without the scanning options).

Jeff

Yes, I had previously a version of McAffee virus-scan and on the new setup I
am using Trend Micro's PC-cillin which is scanning outgaing and incoming
mail and attachments. It does pause and say it is scanning the attachments
and then shortly after the disconnect occurs. I will try your suggestion and
see what happens.

cheers

I have tried disabling outgoing scanning with no luck...modem still
disconnects....
I am now trying attaching a document to a hotmail account (thus testing
sending large files thru the modem) and will see how that goes. Otherwise,
im going to throw some money into the black hole and buy another modem!

I will keep this thread informed.

cheers

I wouldn't feed the black hole just yet. Did you disable outgoing scanning
by just checking some option, or by an uninstall/reinstall method? Norton
anti-virus, at least, seems to still latch onto the outgoing mail unless
you do an uninstall/reinstall. Do you have Outlook set up to disconnect
once it's finished sending?
