Default Protect a Template?

I have an Excel2000 workbook on a shared drive; users fill out some cells in the excel file and are supposed to do a "save as" to save it as a separate file. The problem is that they will often save and overwrite my blank template. What is the best way to go about setting up a protected blank template that they can fill out, but then are forced to save as something different (i.e. they can't overwrite my master blank copy)? I've tried setting up the file as an ".xlt", but that didn't help. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

Hi
set this up as *.xlt file, place this file in the template path of your
computer.
Creating a new file based on this template would NOT overwrite the
existing one

Sorry !

I should learn to read the post before answering.

The above link was for individual machines.

You're on a network, so try this link, which describes only *one* way to
establish a network template system.

If this doesn't seem to work for you, post back for some other procedures.

Thank you for the links, I will read over them again, but I don't think going to each machine is a viable option since I will have over 50 users.

I'm starting to realize the problem may be with how I'm launching Excel. I'm launching from a command button in an MS Access2K database.

The problem is that when the button (launching this excel file) is clicked from MS Access then the original XLT template is opened and not a "book" copy ie (bookingform.xlt) and not (bookingform1.xls)

When I launch the file by double clicking the excel template it works correctly and the copy opens allowing you to input data and then save as an xls doc, not interfering with the original xlt template.

Any ideas?? Thanks again.

Default Protect a Template?

I don't know anything about Access, but,
For a true networked template system in XL, *every* machine that you wish to
have access to the templates, *must* have the path to the template file on
their individual drives.

Older versions of XL allowed *true* templates to exist *anywhere* in the
system, as long as they had a .xlt extension.
From XL97 onwards, *true* templates were recognized by XL by where they were
stored, no matter what the file extension ... .xlt or even .xls.

There's no way around placing the path to the particular template folder on
*every* machine, though this only has to be done *once* at the outset.

Now, if there's something that exists in combination with Access, I'm not
aware of it.
It may pay to perhaps visit an Access group, and ask there if there might be
a procedure that doesn't require the path to be entered on each and every
machine.

I don't speak the Access, but this kind of thing worked ok for me from MSWord.

Maybe just have your button code use it???

Option Explicit
Sub testme()

Dim myXL As Object

Set myXL = Nothing
On Error Resume Next
Set myXL = GetObject(, "Excel.Application")
If Err.Number = 429 Then
Set myXL = CreateObject("Excel.Application")
End If
On Error GoTo 0

myXL.Visible = True

myXL.Workbooks.Add "\\sharename\foldername\templatename.xlt"

Set myXL = Nothing

End Sub

I don't think that I'd use the alternate file location.

MSOffice has a Workgroup templates location that excel can use--but excel can't
change.

If you open MSWord, you can do:
tools|options|file locations
and set that workgroup templates location to the network path you want.

You can also get to this if you use the MSOffice shortcut bar
Rightclick on an open spot|customize|settings tab

Why do you suppose Dave, that any .xlt file placed there *doesn't* open
automatically with the XL session?
