Default Protect a Template?

Just tried this at home on my XP machine, and you're right, you get the task
pane.

BUT ... simply click on "General Templates" in the task pane, and you get
the old, familiar dialog window, with the "General" tab defaulted, and all
the templates displayed.

If you read the linked thread that I posted above, you probably

overlooked
the instruction to "close and re-open XL".
That's pre-supposing, of course, that the folder is populated with .xlt
files.

You should now close XL and then re-open it.

The bad news is that I did close and reopen excel, but in xl2002 that

dialog has
disappeared. In xl2002, you get to see what's called a "task pane".

You've more experience then me in dealing with users, but honestly Dave,
just how many do use that feature?

I've never seen anyone use this successfully. The only time I've seen

questions
about it is when someone is complaining that every file in a folder is

opening
and want it fixed.

So you can set this workgroup path via Word, the office toolbar, or

the registry. I do think that it would have made it much simpler if it

was
changeable in each of the applications that use it.

Same thing here !?!?!?

Newest XL at the plant is 2K, and it works fine there.

The XP machines in the front office aren't linked to this folder since they
don't need the production templates. They use the Office WorkGroups folder.

Have to try them out later.

But, I think the question is XL version or OS ?
Wonder if a true network drive might be part of it?

Unlike your "sophisticated"g set-up Dave, I've a hodge podge of OS's and
XL versions.

I'd guess it was excel. I asked another person to verify this behavior in
xl2002 and it behaved the same way--and that was with a different version of
windows.

Check this out.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...Product=xl2002

Ignore the title!

Scroll to the bottom and read what's under "More Information".

According to them, they shouldn't even be displayed.

I wonder what's the story with XL03?

Default Protect a Template?

Just started looking around and found this.

In XL03, they're saying (advertising?) that you can use the
"AlternateStartUp" location *again*.

http://tinyurl.com/6zm8q

Look under "Storing Templates".

Does that mean that *only* XL02 will not be able to network templates using
the "StartUp" location?

Does Redmond fix all the bugs they know about, or do they just leave some
"hanging"?

Maybe the way you do things (alternate startup folder) is more prevalent than I
thought and MS wants to restore that behavior.

My theory is that if it's documented, it's a feature. If it's undocumented,
it's a bug!

I'm not quite sure how KB articles fit my theory, though.
