Hi Jim,

Office does not automatically check for updates (at least, I've never seen
it: ) ). You may mean the Automatic Updates feature for Windows XP. To turn
this off, use the System applet from the Control Panel.

Within say word under help. check for updates. This takes a user to the
internet. We do not want our students to go to the internet. WE have
restricted them everywhere but here

Why not use a proxy server or similar to prevent them from getting to the
Internet at all, rather than tweaking everything in Windows & user
applications?
