Default Visio shapes & how to show all in toolbox

Does anyone know how to show all of the shape groupings, aka
Templates, (Business, Engineering, Flowchart, General....) in the
Shapes toolbar that is on the left hand side of the screen?

I essentially want to be able to use shapes from various template
categories but want to be able to point and click to them rather than
having to use the search function. I'd like all the template
categories to show up in the shape toolbox.

There is nothing like enough room to show *all* the stencils.
Use menu File - Shapes to see them within their categories.

But when it was first installed on my machine, it did display all of
the categories. Previously when I was working a drawing, I started to
right-click on the categories and close them to clean up the toolbox
thinking that when I restarted they would show up again. But that was
not the case.

Tell me what menu you are using.

What are you right-clicking on? Nothing I know of closes categories by right-clicking on
them. What toolbox? Is this some 3rd-party tool?

In the shapes toolbar you will see categories (different ones
depending on which type of template you chose to open) and if you
right-click on the category (ex. Basic shapes) you can close it. But
there is no way to add in categories.

My guess is you are referring to the “Getting Started Screen” when Visio is
first started. When this option is selected it should display all the
available categories for your copy of Visio. Under Tools Options View
make sure there is a check mark placed next to the “Getting Started Screen”.

Ah, I've suddenly realised what you are talking abou!
I though "shapes toolbar?", there is no shapes toolbar.
What you mean is the actual stencils themselves!

When creating certain drawing types a number of stencils are also opened. I presume you
have been closing some of these. You can add any new stencils, use the menu File - Shapes
and explore all the extra shapes you can use.
If you want to find out what all the stencils were when you created your diagram then just
create a brand new one, write down the names of the stencils and go and find them and open
them as per the above instructions with the new diagram.
