Blurry pictures in Publisher 2003

I created a lot of note card stationery with Publisher 2000. I used pictures
off the Internet, scanned pictures, and pictures from my digital camera.
They all looked great. Once I upgraded to Publisher 2003, the pictures on my
note cards are now blurry. Interestingly, some of them are not blurry. I
haven't figured out if there is any consistency to which type of picture
stays sharp: digital camera, scanned, or Internet, as I can't remember the
source of many of the pictures. Regardless of the source, is there any way I
can get these blurry pictures sharp again in Publisher. The source picture
is always very sharp. Once I copy and paste it into Publisher, it's
degraded. I appreciate any help anyone can give me. S Jan

What happens if you insert rather than copy/paste? Images copied from the
Internet are more times than not of very poor resolution. If you try to enlarge
them the "blurriness" is more pronounced.
There are well over 150,000 images on the Microsoft web pages, try some of them.
These pictures can be copied without losing quality.

Thank you, Mary, for your response. However, I did try the insert over copy
and paste and had the same results-blurry pictures. In Pub 2000, I had no
problems with the pictures, even the ones from the Internet. They were very
high quality and I could enlarge at will. But these same pictures are blurry
in Pub 2003. What a mystery!
The one thing I notice, is that, if I hover over the folder of my pictures,
the popup lists the names of the pictures with .jpg. But once I open the
folder, highlight a picture, go to properties, the type of file is no longer
..jpg, it is Microsoft Picture It! It's that way on all of my pictures, even
the ones from my digital camera. I wonder if that has anything to do with
the blurry problem and how the file type got changed on every picture I have.

You can change the association for your images. Right-click, properties, opens
with...change. I'd suggest using Windows Picture and Fax viewer or
www.irfanveiw.com with the plug-ins. When you look at the properties of these
blurry images, what is the resolution? You may have been lucky in the past and
managed to copy some better images. It could be you were using smaller images
which look okay in a note card setting. Your camera should have a setting that
would improve the resolution.

I apologize that I haven't adequately described the problem. I have all my
pictures stored in a folder (My Pictures) and they are of a good enough
resolution ( 720 x 540 and up) to produce an acceptable product for my
purposes. I can open them with any viewer (Picture It!, Adobe, Microsoft
Picture and Fax viewer, etc.), then print them from any of those apps and
they look fine.

I have inserted them into Word (also did copy and paste) and the pictures
are not degraded at all, no matter what size (3x5 to 8x10). The only app
that does not work is Publisher 2003. They are always very blurry at small
sizes and large sizes. So I don't think the problem has to do with the

I have just tried something interesting. I took my Pub 2003 note card with
the blurry picture, did a Save as and in the "Save as type" box, I selected
"Publisher 2000 Files. And voila! the new note card now has a nice clear
picture again. So this implies to me that the problem is definitely within
Pub 2003.

I finally figured out my problem - it's so simple! I feel really, well, it's
the "s" word! I went to View, Picture and found that the Fast Size and Zoom
button was selected (I guess by default). Once I selected Detailed Display,
the picture returns to its sharp resolution. In Pub 2000, the Fast Size and
Zoom button didn't seem to have an effect on what I saw on the monitor.

We are happy to know you solved this on your own. It never occurred to me it was
the picture view. I assumed the blurriness transferred to the print. Thanks for
posting your success. This solution will be something I will keep in mind if it
comes up again.
