Default Corrupted Excel File

Please help I have a lot of excel file corrupted (hex characters). The file
originally was created under Windows ME. Accidently ME system file deleted
and then the OS upgrade with XP. Files under root c:\ are OK. But excel file
under "documents settings\administrator\my documents" corrupted. The files
can be opened by excel, but the excel assume the file is a text file. And the
file opened with hex characters looks.
