Default .pst import issue for Outlook 2003

Hi There,

I currently have a laptop which uses a pst file which resides on a shared
folder on my outgoing desktop (Asus) - I did this because it has mirrored
drives for resilience (I cannot afford to lose the file!). I have recently
purchased a new desktop (HP) and a usb connected raid 1 external storage
device (Buffalo DriveStation Duo). I have made a copy of the pst file on the
Asus and have created a folder on the storage device and placed the copy in
there. I have renamed it to save any confusion.

When trying to import this renamed file into Outlook it lets me go all the
way through the process and then gives me this ........

File access denied. You do not have permission required to access the file
Z:/business/email/captivate_new.pst.

I have checked the properties of the copy and it's not read-only, and don't
have the faintest idea why it won't import it :-(

I still have my existing PST file on my Asus and am using that until I get
this sorted, but am completely stumped. I'm sure there's something
completely obvious I'm missing here.

Can anyone please help?!?!

Regards

A mirror raid is not a replacement for a backup, there are circumstances
(not uncommon) where if the mirror fails so does all the data.

Within OL, FileOpenData File.......browse to the location.
If it still baulks, then with all OL closed, recopy the desktop pst to the
new drive (in explorer) do not overwrite any pst then attempt to reopen.
I'm assuming both PC's are hard wired to your storage device.

Default .pst import issue for Outlook 2003

Hi DL,

Many thanks for trying to help me.

This is how my network looks ...

Port 1 ---- Buffalo AP--wlan-- laptop (trying to open pst)
Switch Port 2 ------ Asus (old pst here, it works!)
Port 3 ------ HP ---usb--- Ext. Hard drive (new pst here,
doesn't work)

The pst was copied in explorer, the file resides on a shared directory on
the Asus, and pasted onto the external hard drive which has a shared
directory called 'PrivateShare'. The file was renamed from 'email to
'Captivate_new' to save any confusion.

I have tried fileopendata file .... and browsed to Captivate_new etc, but
get the following message .....
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You are about to add a non-unicode capable folder to your profile. This
store should not be used to store multilingual unicode data. Do you want to
continue?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am reluctant to say yes in case I mess everything up. Can you please
advise?

Also, what do you mean by don't not overwrite any pst an attempt to reopen??
Just tell me what to do and I'll do it. I really, really don't want to
screw it up. May be it was the renaming thing which caused an issue. Who
knows, but I am completely stuck.

Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

Regards

All this means is that the copy is not a Unicode PST. Unless you use
non-English data in Outlook, this won't be a problem. Apparently,
captivate_new.pst was created in Outlook 2002 or earlier.

reopen??

When you copy a PST, never overwrite any PST of the same name that may be
connected to an existing Outlook mail profile or you will corrupt the
profile.

Just tell me what to do and I'll do it.

Always avoid exporting to and importing from a PST. It's unnecessary and
you lose data.
