Default New Hard Drive

I am replacing my laptop's old hard drive. I have an external hard drive.
What do I need to save to reinstall everything on the new drive, and where do
I find it? Thanks!

I use XP and Office 2007.

Clone the drive.

Use a tool like XXClone (works marvelously in my tests).
