Default Outlook (2003) archive and moving problems

We have a user who is trying to archive e-mail. The Autoarchive option in Outlook does nothing, and neither does manually selecting Archive (nothing happens when those options are selected, Outlook just acts like it's already completed the process, even though nothing happens).
Does anyone have a clue why this is happening, and what can be done about it?
Same user: attempts to move e-mail from one folder to another. Moving small numbers (10 or so) works, however, attempts to move large numbers locks up the computer. She literallly has thousands of e-mail which needs to be moved, so moving them 10 at a time is not sufficient. Does anyone know why moving more than a few e-mail messages at a time can lock up the computer?
Same user: unable to sort e-mail. It locks up the computer. Could this be caused by simply having a large number of e-mail messages in the folder? If archiving and moving the messages fails (see above), what can be done to combat this?

Archive works on the modified date so it could be that many of the messages
have been recently modified by copy, moving or importing. Look at the
Archive settings and maybe set them to, like, one day.
