Default table of contents is getting corrupted in Word XP (2003 )

Everytime I try to insert a new Table of Contents in this Word document,
www.winsim.com/samples.doc (1.7 MB), Word XP (2003) merges
information from first chapter into the table of contents.

Does anyone know what is going on here ? This Word document was
created from another Word document that has been existing since Word
95.

Thanks,
Lynn McGuire

I haven't looked at your document, but you probably have the text in the
first chapter in one of the Styles Heading1, 2 or 3 that is being used to
construct the table of contents.

Hope this helps.

Or inside the bookmark for one of the headings.

How does one detect and remove this corrupted text ?

Note, this problem only started occuring when I upgraded from Word 2000
to Word 2003 !

If the text is getting into the TOC, then presumably it appears somewhere in
the document. Select the text in the document and see if it has a heading
style applied. If so, applying a body text style should solve the problem,
and it will not appear when you update the TOC. If you don't see the text in
the document, then it's possible it's in a TC field, which will appear if
you display Hidden text.

GreetingsˇV

Your document includes a number of pictures with paragraph outline level
set to ˇ§Level 1ˇ¨. This is why the pictures are getting into the TOC. You
have to apply a Body Text level to all of them. Here is how to proceed:
1. Press Ctrl+F.
2. In the ˇ§Find whatˇ¨ box, enter the following string:
^g^p
3. Select the ˇ§Highlight all items found inˇ¨ check box.
4. Choose ˇ§Main documentˇ¨ in the corresponding drop-down list below.
5. Press ˇ§Find Allˇ¨.
6. Close the ˇ§Find and replaceˇ¨ dialog, but leave the selection AS IS in
the document window.
7. From the Format menu, select ParagraphˇK
8. In the ˇ§Paragraphˇ¨ dialog box, select the ˇ§Indents and Spacingˇ¨ tab.
9. Choose ˇ§Body textˇ¨ in the ˇ§Outline levelˇ¨ drop-down list.
10. OK out of the dialog.
The TOC should now update correctly.

Cheers
Robert

Some more technical details about your document.
If you click in the TOC, then press Alt+F9, you˙ll notice that the TOC
field includes the ´\uˇ switch:
TOC \o "1-3" \h \z \u
This ´\uˇ switch was introduced in MS Word 2003 and means ´build the TOC
using paragraph outline levelsˇ. This is why your TOC includes the pictures
associated with ´outline level 1ˇ when you try to update it.
So if you want your table to update as expected, all you have to do is
change the TOC field syntax from ´TOC \o "1-3" \h \z \uˇ to ´TOC \o "1-3"
\h \zˇ.
Note that this document also includes unwanted header text in the second
section (TOC pages). If you want to remove these texts, display the
headers, click in each header, press Ctrl+A, then the Del key.
