Somehow I lost the toolbar to edit cell contents. How do I re-insert that
toolbar?

Excel 2003 & earlier:
Tools-Options-Display and check Formula Bar
Excel 2007
Offcie button, Excel options, Advanced, Display and check Formula Bar
