Default Headers & Footers

Thank you for your suggestions. Maybe I can be more specific. I have a 6
chapter document. I want each chapter to start on an odd page. On the very
first page I enter an odd section break. Enter even/odd page numbers -- then
edit header to add the chapter title on the right hand side of the first
page, next to the page #.

For the next page -- an even page, I click the page numbers and select the
even page (in this case I'm using Accent 1 & 2) Edit the header to reflect
the even page text -- which remains the same throughout the document. No
problem with this.

At the beginning of chapter 2 I insert an odd page break, click to edit
header and the Link to Connect button lights up. If I click on the header
first -- the light goes dim. If I click on the button first, to disconnect,
then edit the chapter title, it works. It works for two or three chapters,
then when I advance to the next chapter, same process. Insert odd page break
- -----now I want to change the chapter title but the link button is still
dim. However, on the second page of the chapter it lights up. Here's where
I start having problems. If I clink on the disconnect button on the 2nd page
-- things start heading south fast. Even if I manually change the headers,
it won't hold true when I move back and forth in the document.

I understand word is adding a blank page to ensure odd page beginnings --
even when the next page is an odd one -- is this related to why I can't
disconnect from the previous chapter to change the title? This is driving me
crazy. Should I prepare the complete document then go back and insert the
page #'s and headers? I thought I could just keep adding text, changing
chapters as I came to them.

You can access styleref through InsertQuickParts but I've never used it
and word doesn't include it in their help files.

Default Headers & Footers

First of all, I assume you don't want a header on the first page of the
chapter (that would be very odd), so you should have "Different First Page"
enabled as well as "Different Odd and Even." Now, when dealing with the
headers, be aware that you will have a First Page Header (which will always
be an odd page since you're using Odd Page section breaks), Even Page
Header, and Odd Page Header. If your chapters are very short, it's possible
you won't see all three headers in a given section, so be very careful to
notice which one you're in.

The First Page Header is going to be blank (you may want to put the page
number in the First Page Footer). That will be true for every chapter, so
you can leave all the First Page Headers linked. Once you've set up the Even
Page Header, you shouldn't need to do anything else to it, and all those can
stay linked as well. The only headers you should have to unlink are the Odd
Page Headers and those only if you really want to make work for yourself by
typing the chapter title in manually; as has already been pointed out, you
can put a StyleRef field in the Odd Page Header and it will pick up the
current chapter title so that you can leave all those headers linked as
well.

Default Headers & Footers

Note that when you add a section break, you should do so at the *end* of the text of your preceding chapter; otherwise you may very well end up with an extra page. Also, avoid excessive paragraph marks (¶) in the text. The rule is: one paragraph, one paragraph mark. (To display paragraph marks as well as other nonprinting marks, click the ¶ button on the Home tab.)

For Word to correctly handle "filler" pages, you need to enable "Different odd and even" or "Mirror margins" in Page Setup.

By default, when you create a new section, Link to Previous (called Same as Previous in some versions of Word) is enabled for each header and each footer in the new section.

Default Headers & Footers

Drinks are on me! Thank you for hanging in there.

Yes, you had it right as to what I was trying to achieve. Making the break
at the end of a section made sense to me but I quote: ".. place the cursor at
the beginning of the page where you want to start varying the header ----then
click section break..." All the instructions I found said the same thing. I
knew it had to be in the section breaks Everything else fell into line
once I corrected that.

Second - before I screw it up again....I have way too many P marks - but not
sure how they get in. I tried to delete them in draft mode last night -- but
it messed up the image placement. I am moving text and some images by
entering or deleting spaces -- is that my problem there?

Now I need to go back through the entire document and adjust the text and
images. Will my pages align as I delete/add text? Will the page number and
headers adjust?

Need to find some info on styleref -- how to set the fields etc. I found one
tutorial for 2004 and earlier so things are a little different. But I will
keep looking. Thanks Again.

Find the basic Help article on StyleRef fields at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...861931033.aspx and some
additional information at http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/StyleRef.htm.

Assuming you have used a specific style (such as Heading 1) for your chapter
titles and nothing else, the StyleRef field will do what you need.

tutorial for 2004 and earlier so things are a little different. But I
will
keep looking. Thanks Again.

Note that when you add a section break, you should do so at the *end*
of the text of your preceding chapter; otherwise you may very well end
up with an extra page. Also, avoid excessive paragraph marks (¶) in the
text. The rule is: one paragraph, one paragraph mark. (To display
paragraph marks as well as other nonprinting marks, click the ¶ button
on the Home tab.)

For Word to correctly handle "filler" pages, you need to enable
"Different odd and even" or "Mirror margins" in Page Setup.

By default, when you create a new section, Link to Previous (called
Same as Previous in some versions of Word) is enabled for each header
and each footer in the new section.

Thank you for your suggestions. Maybe I can be more specific. I have
a 6
chapter document. I want each chapter to start on an odd page. On
the very
first page I enter an odd section break. Enter even/odd page
numbers -- then
edit header to add the chapter title on the right hand side of the
first
page, next to the page #.

For the next page -- an even page, I click the page numbers and select
the
even page (in this case I'm using Accent 1 & 2) Edit the header to
reflect
the even page text -- which remains the same throughout the document.
No
problem with this.

At the beginning of chapter 2 I insert an odd page break, click to
edit
header and the Link to Connect button lights up. If I click on the
header
first -- the light goes dim. If I click on the button first, to
disconnect,
then edit the chapter title, it works. It works for two or three
chapters,
then when I advance to the next chapter, same process. Insert odd
page break
- -----now I want to change the chapter title but the link button is
still
dim. However, on the second page of the chapter it lights up. Here's
where
I start having problems. If I clink on the disconnect button on the
2nd page
-- things start heading south fast. Even if I manually change the
headers,
it won't hold true when I move back and forth in the document.

I understand word is adding a blank page to ensure odd page
beginnings --
even when the next page is an odd one -- is this related to why I
can't
disconnect from the previous chapter to change the title? This is
driving me
crazy. Should I prepare the complete document then go back and insert
the
page #'s and headers? I thought I could just keep adding text,
changing
chapters as I came to them.

You can access styleref through InsertQuickParts but I've never used
it
and word doesn't include it in their help files.

Default Headers & Footers

I'm glad you got it sorted (sort of).

When it comes to paragraph marks (pilcrows), such a nonprinting mark is added
each time you press Enter. Deleting them can be done with Find and Replace, but
if you have many objects/figures in the drawing layer, you may not want to do
that, because each object is anchored to a paragraph, and deleting an anchor
deletes the object as well.

I'd leave the marks the way they are, for now--and for this document.
