Default Ruler At Top of Document

That ruler at the top of each new blank... the one numbered from 1 to 7 and
used to set tabs... where can I find a description of it's function please.
I don't even know what to call it. I've tried identifying it by turning off
toolbars. That didn't work. An number of topics crop up when I search for
"ruler" or "scale" but it might take a lot of searching before I find a good
thumbnail description.

What's of particular interest at the moment is the fact that the right tab
stops at 6 not 7. Lots of white space on my screen.

John,
Ruler that is the right word, you can turn it on or off using View - Ruler.
Maybe this will help as to it's function:

The white part of the ruler shows the typing line. If you change the margins
in Page Setup the right indent marker will move accordingly.
