Can't Open MDE
Have an Access 97 MDE linked to an MDB. MDE opened correctly 7 days ago.
Now when we click on the program icon we get a program screen with no forms or menus. We can open the same MDE from another PC that is mapped into this pc with no problems. We just cannot open it from the resident PC Any suggestions? |

Hi.
We can open the same MDE from another PC that is mapped into this pc with no problems. That's good news. It means that the file the other PC is opening is okay. It does _not_ mean that the file on the problem PC is okay though, because the other PC may be pointing to a different file. Ensure that both PC's are opening the same file. Now when we click on the program icon we get a program screen with no forms or menus. This is what one would see if the database were opened in runtime mode, with the database window hidden and no startup form set. When you "click on the program icon," is this icon a shortcut, by chance? And is the other PC opening this MDE database from a shortcut, as well? The use of shortcuts would help explain the differences you now see that weren't evident a week ago. Something has changed in the last week that has changed one PC, but not the other, most likely a shortcut or the Access application defaults. Have you installed or uninstalled any software on the problem computer in the last week? HTH. Gunny See http://www.QBuilt.com for all your database needs. Thanks for the response -
1. We moved the MDB data file and the MDE file to the other PC which was the development PC and put them in the correct locations and were able to open with no problems 2. No software installed on the problem PC that we know about 3. Opened the file on the Problem PC by clicking on the startup icon and by clicking on the actual file itself. Same results both times - which is no results 4. The development PC was able to open the files using Access developer edition - Is it possible I have a bad run time version installed on the Problem PC? Hi, Linda.
1. We moved the MDB data file and the MDE file to the other PC which was the development PC and put them in the correct locations and were able to open with no problems We have tested everything but reinstall the runtime version. On the problem PC, do you see a limited menu with only "File," "Window," and "Help" menu items, but no database window and no form displayed? If so, then press CTRLF10. Do you see a change in the title bar? If so, then close the application on the problem PC, and then open the MDE file from the development PC. Select the Tools menu - Startup... to open the Startup dialog window. Select one of the form names in the "Display Form/Page" combo box. Select the "OK" button to save the change. Now go back to the problem PC and open the MDE file. Do you see the form now and a few more items on the menu that weren't there before? HTH. Hi Gunny,
What a disaster yesterday was. First I will answer your questions. 1. On the problem PC we did not ever see any type of menu. But I was able to change the mde so that it opened a form. But never the menu that was supposed to allow the user to see the form. 2. Since I could not get anything to work, I uninstalled and reinstalled the application. Well that caused a major problem as the uninstall removed the registry keys for another major application. So it took me most of the day to get the other application back up. But the new installation did not cure the problem. So in conclusion - no matter what I do - I can never see a menu of any type after the ap opens. I can get a glance at an abreviated menu only as the ap opens, then all menus disappear. Shift Key while opening has no effect. Linda "'69 Camaro" wrote: Hi, Linda. 1. Hi, Linda.
1. On the problem PC we did not ever see any type of menu. But I was able to change the mde so that it opened a form. So, as soon as you changed the startup properties to open to a certain form, the problem PC correctly opened the Runtime version of the application with that particular form. Correct? I can get a glance at an abreviated menu only as the ap opens, then all menus disappear. After the Runtime version is fully open on the problem PC, is there a "strip" or horizontal space below the application title bar where the menu bar would be? Shift Key while opening has no effect. That's because you are using the Runtime version. 2. Since I could not get anything to work, I uninstalled and reinstalled the application. You uninstalled and reinstalled the Access Runtime version on the problem PC? That probably wasn't necessary. then press CTRLF10. Do you see a change in the title bar? Did you press CTRLF10 in the Runtime MDE? Did that change the application title bar in any way? I suspect that your MDE's startup properties include: 1.) A custom menu bar. 2.) The custom menu bar does not include "File," "Window," and "Help" menu items. 2.) Allow Full Menus is unchecked. 3.) Allow Built-in Toolbars is unchecked. Are these suspicions correct? Gunny,
Let's try again. 1. Yes I was able to see the form when I changed the mde startup 2. No strip under title where the menu should be. 3. CTRLF10 didn't change anything in the runtime 4. 1.) Hi, Linda.
Unfortunately, I don't have Office 97 ODE, so I can't compare what you are seeing with what you _should_ be seeing. I only have later versions of Access available to see the effects of the Runtime version by using the /Runtime command-line switch to open a test database. Much of what you've been describing is what one would expect to see in the Runtime version of Access: no database window, limited menu until the custom menu replaces it during startup, no form displayed unless it's set as a startup form, no toolbars, et cetera. 1. Yes I was able to see the form when I changed the mde startup Good. That's expected. 2. No strip under title where the menu should be. There's an empty strip under the Access application title bar in later Runtime versions when the relevant menu items are not included on the custom menu, and the built-in menu and toolbars are not displayed. So there's a difference. 3. CTRLF10 didn't change anything in the runtime It makes a visible change to the window in later versions. Another difference. 2.) Allow Full Menus is unchecked. -- no it is checked Can you check the source code from the MDB file? Is there VBA code setting the display of the built-in menu database property to false? If there isn't any code in the database, can you find out if a utility application has been used to set this database property to false? 3.) Allow Built-in Toolbars is unchecked. -- no it is checked Sorry. My mistake. The Runtime version doesn't show this, so it doesn't matter whether it's checked or not. 5. Should I just try F10 since that is supposed to toggle the menu bar on and off. I would not expect this to do anything unless your custom menu has at least one of the default "File," "Window," and "Help" menu items, which it doesn't. Go ahead and try it if you'd like to see what happens. Can you make a copy of the MDB database file, then in this copy create a new custom menu bar that duplicates the built-in menu bar exactly (or at least the default Runtime menu items of "File," "Window," and "Help"), then set this new custom menu as the menu bar at startup? Then try to open this database with the problem PC and see what the menu looks like in the Runtime version. Hopefully, you'll see the default "File," "Window," and "Help" menu items, along with the startup form. If that's the case, then it means that your current custom menu bar doesn't have the right menu items that would enable the Access Runtime version to display it when the form opens. HTH. I still don't know what happened but this is what I did and my app now is usable. I took your last suggestion and tried to apply it to my problem so that I could find a work around. 1. I copied the MDB application to a new file with a new name 2. Created a new toolbar identical to the old one 3. Set the new toolbar as the default in the Setup menu 4. Created my MDE with a new name 5. Moved the new MDE to the Problem PC and changed the startup icons to point to the new MDE 6. Voila it works!!!! Thanks for all your help in trying to locate the problem. Linda "'69 Camaro" wrote: Hi, Linda. HTH.
