Default Sorting address book in Outlook 2002

I am trying to sort the address book in version 2002
(10.4219.4219) SP-2. In my older Outlook versions, I could
click on a heading and be able to sort the address book by
any of the headings (email address or name etc) I am
trying to compare lists of email address's sorted
alphabetically to create a distribution list and
unfortunately, my address book comes up sorted
alphabetically by name. Help me Russ!

Thanks for the quick response. I hope I am responding to
you in the correct format.
That didn't help. All that does is adjust my "Contacts" I
need to be able to sort my address book. Outlook Express
allows you to do that. I hate to have to go back to that.

Not true.
What I posted sorts your Outlook address book view, NOT your Contacts
Folder.
Did you restart the Outlook Address Book Service after you made the changes?
Are you describing the view you want to sort correctly?

I wish it were not true.

If I go to tools, Email accounts, View or change existing
directories or address books, and then choose "Change" the
only option showing, Outlook address book the only options
available in the next box is "Show names by" - First Last
or File As (Smith, John) or "Remove this address book.
Neither of these options solve my problem.
My issue again is, when I am creating a distribution list,
or even creating an email, and in basic email creation,
when you click on the "TO" bar to bring up your address
book, the contacts located in the address book are sorted
by "Name" only. If you look at Outlook Express, the
address book is sortable by clicking on the headers to
sort. Is there a way to reconfigure Outlook address book
so that it will have that function. Older versions used to
be able to do that. Major flaw in design if not.

That "Name" will either be First/ Last or your File As... field, depending
on which option you have chosen.
You just need to configure your File As... fields to be Last/ First to sort
the Outlook Address Book by Last/First. The vast majority of users already
have their File As... fields configured as Last/ First since that is the
default.

Default Sorting address book in Outlook 2002

I have all that configured. I don't think you are
following my question.
In outlook express, you have the options of sorting the
address book by any of the field headings at the top of
the address book. For instance, as I open O.E.'s address
book, the field headings are "Name" then "Email Address"
then "Business Phone" then last is "Home Phone". If I
click on any of the grey header bars, the list will sort
by that field. (like in Excel for example)
I take it this is not going to happen in Outlook. I hope
that they see this as a need and improve on this in the
future. It's a function I used often.
Thanks for your help Russ. Sorry to make you nuts with
this.

I was following your question on how to sort the Outlook Address Book by
Last Name.
Re-sorting the Outlook Address Book "on the fly" by clicking on the column
header has never been a feature of the Outlook Address Book, only the
Windows Address Book.

The Outlook Address Book has been in need of improvement (and has received
none) since Outlook was first released. Please add your voice to ours. You
can send Outlook feature requests to with "Outlook" in
the subject and to

Now, you want the bad news? Even if you can get the Outlook Address Book to
sort the way you want, odds are, DL's won't follow suit.

Default Sorting address book in Outlook 2002

One other thing to keep in mind he One reason the Outlook Address Book
may have so few features is that Outlook has focused it development on
alternative interfaces for Contact management. People seemed mired in the
need to use an "Address Book," but there are far better interfaces to use:
Contacts Folders with various customized views, filters, and sorts;
Categories; Separate Contacts subfolders to name a few.

You might want to consider weaning yourself from the Address Book view and
exploring your other options.

Default Sorting address book in Outlook 2002

Thanks for everything Russ. I will be voicing my opinion
and needs.

I sit here today, going through returned emails from a
flyer I sent out to business contacts, old and new. Maybe
70 recipients. Many have come back as undeliverable due to
the recipient changing jobs. As you know, when you recieve
a "SYstem Administrator" message, they so not list the
recipient info other than their email address. SO I have
to keep the emails open while I scan for the email address
in the address book so I can remove the address. Without
being able to sort by email address, it makes it very
difficult.
