Default Characters have become invisible in Word documents

Hi all

I strongly suspect that this might be a compatability issue between Word
2003 and 2007 however downloading the compatibility software ddidnt resolve
the problem.

I have quite a few word documents for which the writing sees to have
disappeared; ie the document is now empty. The strange thing is that when i
do a word count is tells me how many words and characteres there are which
basically matches the quantity of info I have typed in.

How can I resolve this and get back my work ?
Cheers
