Default Can't SAVE files to Folders from EXCEL (and WORD)

I can't save files to existing folders... can't even do a "save as"... the
EXCEL 2003 Program gets to a "Not Responding" state and I have to crash it.
I was able to save a file to the "My Documents" folder. The same thing
happened to my Word Program. This all happened after I did the latest
security update to the XP program. I "removed" and then reinstalled the
Office 2003 program but the problem still exists.

Hi David:

You can remove the offending update from Add/Remove Programs, where it shows
as "Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531)". Make sure the "show updates"
box at the top is ticked or you won't see hotfixes in the list.

Doesn't this exposure you to security problems. And also, could this cause
additional problems? Why can't Microsoft fix this.

It doesn't expose you to any more security problems than you had the
minute/day/month/year before you installed the update.

How clever of you Suzanne. Really useless response.

I had the very same problem - after a day and a half of trying to figure out
what was wrong I stumbled onto this forum. I tried the fix suggested and now
Word and Excel save to folders. Thanks for the help - but no Thanks to
Microsoft for the lost time and effort of the last two days.

And apparently I'm still insecure since I haven't yet downloaded the updates
(Automatic Updates prompted, I said yes, and then nothing happened).

Well, you can read the KB article and assess the danger for yourself. Did
you really expect to get an answer for all of the half a dozen or more times
you posted this question?

I expected that there was likely no fix, but I would ask anyways, being that
this is not my area of expertise. The worst that I thought could happen that
I would find no answer. Obviously you have revealed that I underestimated the
worst.

Instead I would encounter a snotty, arrogant individual who really had no
value added information, but was preoccupied with showing off how smart they
could make themselves seem even at the expense of denigrating others.
