Outlook 2003 Locks Up Under WinXP Pro SP2
We recently installed Office 2003 on this computer. Outlook 2003 won't work
right for one user. At least, not always. It's setup to launch when Windows starts and that works fine. That user can Minimize & Maximize Outlook 2003 with no problem. Their e-mail account is a standard POP3 account. If that user exits Outlook 2003 (by clicking the red X box) it will not restart by clicking on the Outlook 2003 icon on the desktop or on the Start menu. An hourglass temporarily appears, then disappears. An Outlook icon then appears in Systray. When the user left-clicks on that icon in Systray, a Microsoft Outlook balloon with an exclamation mark pops up, stating: "Outlook is not responding. If you are using an Exchange Server e-mail account, you can cancel pending server requests by clicking on the Outlook icon in the Notifications area and then clicking Cancel Server Request on the shortcut menu." I do not believe POP3 e-mail accounts are Exchange Server accounts, so that message is not helpful for us. The only way we have found to avoid a Power Down & Power Up solution (which does work) is to log off and then back on again. However, when we do, a message pops up while Outlook is launching that states: "Outlook failed to start correctly last time. Starting Outlook in Safe Mode will help you isolate a startup problem in order to successfully start the program. Some functionality may be disabled in this mode. Do you want Safe Mode?" If we click the Yes button on that error message, Outlook 2003 opens, but is totally locked up. That is, no menus will open, no buttons respond to clicking on them--including the red X Box. The only way we've found to get rid of Outlook 2003 in Safe Mode is to use the Windows Task Manager and restart the computer. If we click the No button, Outlook 2003 opens and appears to work normally. However, the next time we exit Outlook 2003 by either clicking File and selecting Exit, or by clicking the red X box Outlook 2003 will not thereafter open when we click on it's icon on the desktop. I have double-checked the e-mail account setup to be sure it is correctly setup as a POP3 e-mail account. When I run Test Account Settings it works fine for sending and receiving e-mail. One other user on this computer can exit the same installation of Outlook 2003 using the red X box or File|Exit, then restart it later with no problems whatsoever. So the problem appears to be limited to something related to the primary user of this computer. I am at a loss as to what might cause these strange problems. So I shall greatly appreciate your help to get them resolved. With kindest regards, Dick Smith |
