Default Importing Text with Carriage Returns inside cell values

I am trying to import TAB delimited text from an application. The number of
columns in each row is always fixed, but the values in one column include
carriage returns, since they are text with paragraphs. Is there any way to
import them as single text values into excel?

example format : Name [TAB] Description [TAB] Parent Name

example row: John [TAB] John is a farmer.
His dad's name is Joe.
He works very hard. [TAB] Joe

I've always gone back to the program that generated the text file and had those
internal linefeeds/carriage returns changed to a unique/unused character--maybe
the vertical bar???

Then import the data and change that character to the alt-enter (linefeed).
