Compact and repair db question
I am running Access 2003 on Windows Server 2003 / Windows XP SP2
workstations. I run the compact and repair option but the database does not change size and I am left with a new file in the folder called db1, which is a bit smaller. Did the compact and repair fail or did it succeed and I just need to rename the db1 file to the database? I did not have to do this before. |

The way the Compact utility works is to copy the database to a new database named db1 (or db2 if there already is a db1, etc.); it then deletes the original database and renames db1 to the old name. You will get this partial compact if you don't have rights to delete or rename files in the database folder. Check the windows security settings on the folder; you may want to have a different logon with elevated privileges if you don't want to provide Delete privileges to users. -- John W. Vinson [MVP] |
