Default initial style ?

so it's like this - i'm creating a GIANT manual for my department, and i
sometimes have to copy/paste material from another source into my
manual. problem: i try to change the style of the text i've pasted in,
but it will not change from "Inital Style". what is that? some crazy
'hands off, i'm locked' kind of style? if anyone can help, i would be
forever in your debt!! thanks, krista

The style you are seeing could be a character style, which overrides
the paragraph style of the paragraph. Click the arrow next to the
Style box on the Formatting toolbar. Does the selected style have an
underlined "a" next to it? If it does, then it's a character style. In
order to remove all character styles from your document, select the
entire document and then press CTRL+SPACEBAR. Note that this command
also removes any direct font formatting, such as bold or italic, from
the text. A safer method is to use EditReplace; choose to replace
"Initial Style" with the "Default Paragraph Font" character style,
which resets its formatting to that of the underlying paragraph style.
