How do I change my Normal template?
Actually, if you first apply direct formatting to text, typing a style name
and pressing Enter will incorporate that formatting into the style you are creating. Of course, which method you prefer is largely a matter of taste. -- Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "Peter T. Daniels" wrote in message ... I tried typing a new style name. It created it and applied it to the paragraph the cursor was in -- but the method doesn't save any keystrokes over the New Style button on Styles & Formatting, because you have to choose Modify in order to make it into a different style. On Sep 14, 8:05 am, "Stefan Blom" wrote: A good thing about the Apply Styles pane is that you can *type* a style name; Word will autocomplete it and you can then press Enter to apply it. Note that if you type a nonexisting style name, pressing Enter will create such a style (as a paragraph style). -- Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "Peter T. Daniels" wrote in ... I just remembered to check this out -- I don't see the use of the Apply Styles panel: it seems that it does (some of) the same things as the Styles and Formatting panel, but with one more click (on the dropdown in order to select the style you want). On Sep 10, 1:59 pm, "Stefan Blom" wrote: But note that theApplyStylespane (Ctrl+Shift+S) doesn't have all the options of theStylespane (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S). -- Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "Peter T. I see from my Word- generated Keyboard Shortcuts list printed 9/7/05 that the two-button and not the three-button version is listed. How do I change my Normal template?
Finally, a straight-forward answer. (The help in Word 2007 was not helpful
at all for doing this.) BTW, I'm a Technical Writer. "Stefan Blom" wrote: In Word 2007, you can do the following to change the document defaults: Display the Styles pane, for example by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S. Click the Manage Styles button. On the Set Defaults tab, specify the desired settings. Before clicking OK, select "New documents based on this template." -- Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "busedteach" wrote in message ... I agree. Why on earth would they change the default document to space 1.15 anyway. No one types documents with that kind of spacing. I am a teacher and it is annoying to have to explain to each student how to change their document every time they open it up. I've had no luck yet figuring out how to change the templete. Wasting my valuable time I need to planning for class! "Doug" wrote: If Microsoft didn't keep changing things around and forcing us to buy their new products, they wouldn't have enough business. This is madenning. They should write a book on how to make a simple task a major pain-in-the-ass, because this used to be simple. What a waste of time! "JGT" wrote: OK now I'm totally confused after reading all the previous post. Recently I upgraded from Office 2003 to Office 2007 (wow what a pain-in-the-ass change) and cannot easily find stuff (sorry but IMHO the ribbon is a GIANT step backwards). I get so tired of clicking on things only to discover what I'm looking for is not there. In office 2003 I made extensive modifications to the normal.dot file and now I want these changes in my normal.dotm file. In 2003 I could open a document and merge the template of the open document into my normal template. Is this possible in 2007? If so how? |

How do I change my Normal template?
Thank you so much - I've been trying to figure out how to change the normal
template in 2007 for months! None of the help instructions were clear enough. Just stated "...Open the template and make sure you have the template open before you make changes..." Thanks again! How do I change my Normal template?
It is easy enough to change the normal.dotm template. But what is normal
spacing anyway? There was probably a good reason to make it 1.15. I changed mine to 1.0 just because I like round numbers. "busedteach" wrote: I agree. Setting it to "Multiple" and 1.0 is the same as setting it to
"Single". -- Regards, Jay Freedman Microsoft Word MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org Email cannot be acknowledged; please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup so all may benefit. How do I change my Normal template?
Word 2007 provides the opportunity to use style sets. You can save your
preferences as a personal style set. The 1.15 spacing was undoubtedly chosen because of presentation. It looks better on the page. However you are not obliged to stick with that if you prefer something different. You could have left the 2007 styles as they were and chosen the 2003 style set from the Styles dialog on the home tab which would have removed the additional spacing from the normal style making its spacing similar to that of Word 2003, without the need to make any changes to existing styles. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org ..
