Take a look at Kevin Hill of 3NF Consulting's post. He is tellong the poster
to contact him too! Why aren't you complaining about his "advertising"?

I can help you for far less than $5000!!! I am in business to provide

If you can't get the help you need in the newsgroup, I can help you for a
very reasonable fee.
Over 1000 Access users have come to me for help.
Need a month calendar or 7 day calendar? Contact me.

These 1000 (if at all a real figure..) is only the result of
-- 4 years abusing the newsgroups.
-- 4 years blatantly advertising and job hunting.

You just don't care about the newsgroups. You have no ethics at all.
You only care about making money, and you act as if the groups are your
private hunting ground.

-- You abuse this group and others for job-hunting and advertising over and
over again
-- You are insulting lots of people here when they ask you to stop this
-- You posted as Steve, Ron, Tom, Rachel, Kathy, Kristine, Heather and ???
while asking questions
(the latest 'star's': 'Access Resource' and Tom )
-- You try to sell a CD ($125,--) with FREE code you gathered from these
groups here
-- There even has been a 'Scam-alert' about you which has been explained
recently in the thread 'To all':
http://groups.google.com/group/comp....954261f9?hl=en
-- Also recently it became clear that you have been spamming innocent people
asking questions:

So why would ANYBODY ever trust a person like you and hire you?

Possibly because I do it very rarely and suggested that he can contact me,
or anyone else that posts here.

I have nothing for or against you...just pointing out that my advertising is
limited to a link, and in the case of this original post there's not a
simple answer. Pointing him to any qualified consultant wass the right
thing to do here. Makes no difference if that's you, me or the guy down the
street as long as the advice is solid.

Have a nice day :-)

Nah....I was specifically asked if I knew any database programmers that
would charge less than $5000. As it happens, I do. And its not me, its a
good friend of mine that is between gigs right now. I get my work through
other means. I've been coming to the newsgroups off and on for a number of
years (Access and SQL Server) for the sole purpose of answering newbie
questions. Sometimes people contact me, most times not, and that's fine.
I've probably made solicitations 5 times in thousands of replies.

Now, if I did this in every thread or every post then your point would be
accurate. :-)

Have a nice day...

Kevin,
IMO your second post in this thread is also *only* job hunting and totally

Default How do I set up a small business database using Access??

The Access interface is pretty easy to use but if someone with absolutely no
experience told you they built an application from scratch in a couple of
weeks, that application didn't do much. It was probably a very simple list
manager which could probably have even been done with Excel. I know that
Microsoft likes to promote Access as a database tool that anyone can use and
it is but only in a very limited sense and to say anything else really
denigrates the professional developer. I can prepare a tax return but that
doesn't make me a professional or even capable of preparing your return if
it has the slightest little twist to it. I have spent over 30 years
designing applications. I really don't think anyone without any experience
at all ( and even most with experience) could even come close to producing
the quality product that I can produce.

The cost of custom software can be surprising when you think about what you
get with a product like QuickBooks for around $200. For custom development,
you get quotes that can easily get into 5 digits for what you probably
consider to be a very simple application. The difference is that thousands
of copies of QuickBooks are sold every year over which development costs can
be amortized but there is only ONE copy of your custom application. That
means you must be prepared to pay the full cost. If your application is one
that has market potential, you may be able to work out a deal with the
developer to allow him to market the finished product. If you decide to do
this, be sure to get a lawyer to draw up a reasonable contract to define
ownership (you normally own work for hire in the absence of any other
agreement) and revenue sharing.

Try searching the web for the type of application you need. You might get
lucky. More likely is that if you find something even remotely close,
you'll have to change your way of doing business in order to work within the
confines of the packaged software.

You could struggle and try to create the application yourself but you will
be taking time away from your business to do that. Is your time more
valuable learning to be a developer or managing your business? Also, be
wary of hiring the cheapest developer. This your business and you will end
up with a better product if you let a professional develop it.

Finding a professional is another matter. If you have any acquaintances who
have successfully worked with a professional that they can recommend you can
hire someone with a little bit of confidence. It is possible to find very
cheap developers over the net (as low as $3.00 per hour if they're in
India), but it is hard to know what you are buying plus communicating
requirements is more difficult when you can't have face to face meetings,
especially if you are trying to work with someone who doesn't speak English.
Working remotely is doable though if your thoughts are well organized and
you can communicate them effectively in writing.

If you tell us a little more about your business, we might be able to
recommend an off the shelf solution.

"78cryj" wrote in message

Thank you much Jeff! I thought about hiring a professional myself until
someone told me that the microsoft Access software was very people
friendly,
and that they knew someone who had built their own database from scratch
with
no experience in a matter of a couple of weeks. I have tried my best, but
all
I know how to do is composing pages with like let's say a customer's
profile,
but how about methods of payement and all that good stuff so I will just
go
with a professional! Thanks for your reply!

"Jeff Boyce" wrote:

If you have little experience w/ either database applications or Access,
brace yourself. The learning curve is fairly steep. Add "web" to that
and
you have a real project before you...

You'll find that the newsgroups are great for answering specific
questions,
but a general "how do I set up a database/application to do xxxx" may
only
garner general suggestions.

Good luck!
