Default Compact & Repair Corrupt Error Message

I get the error message below a lot when I do a compact and repair. I use
Access 2002. I have to do a compact and repair a couple more times to get it
to compact and repair correctly. Does anyone know what the problem is?

"Cannot open database...(path).It may not be a database that your
application recognizes, or the file may be corrupt."

The database may have some corruption that compact & repair cannot
expunge - in fact it may be damaged beyond repair.

Check out Tony Toews' excellent corruption FAQ:

http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/corruptmdbs.htm

for suggestions about how to prevent (or at least inhibit) such
corruption, and to recover an intact database.
