Default Publisher vs. PageMaker, QuarkXPress?

I have been employed in commercial (newspaper) prepress for more than 10
years and have used and am quite familiar with PageMaker and QuarkXPress.
Now I have retired (more or less) and want to do some freelance publishing
without having to make a major software investment. Publisher seems like a
bargain compared to Quark.

Not being familiar with Publisher, I'm hoping some folks here can help me
understand what features and capabilities I'll be losing by going with
Publisher. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Lew

Why did you fail to mention Serif PagePlus???
PagePlus is PDF and CMYK all built in.
PagePlus gives you substantially more control over things than Publisher does.
If you are familiar with PageMaker then PagePlus is a natural.

Davey, as Brian has told you many times, Publisher is more than capable of
CMYK separations.

Yeah, but not the ease of getting the CMYK into a PDF file which is what you
need.

Obviously you are void of any knowledge about CMYK and PDF and how Publisher
fails to function correctly in that area.

Sarah,

I admit, I do not not have Pub 2003 (I'm still running 98 and from what
I understand 03 will not run correctly) so am not completely familiar
with how it works. I know it cannot output pdf files directly, without
the need of Acrobat or a similar program, but can one create a composite
CMYK pdf with 03, using Acrobat? Can I select a CMYK color scheme - so
that the colors I select for text will print the way they look on screen?

Mike

It's a long winded question Bob. Publisher (nor PagePlus) don't offer the
extensive feature list that Quark and PageMaker offer, hence the exorbant
prices. It all depends on what you are looking to do.

If you plan on "freelancing" by making a business out of Publisher, you
could qualify for a free copy of Publisher 2003 with free unlimited
email/phone printing/publishing support from Microsoft through their free
PSPP program. Here is a link to the information (which includes you on a
list of printers when people are searching for Publisher
printers/designers):

Why don't you tell us what features you NEED?

!??!!??!?! Hardly. There is NO comparison. PageMaker is a UI disaster. It's is a natural between PagePlus and Publisher as they share many common UI's and dialog.

PageMaker compared to PagePlus/Publisher is like night and day.

Brian,

Great! Can I get a free copy of Win XP so I can run Pub, under the terms
of the MSSP program?
