Default Newbie: audio and animation together, plus slide auto-forwarding

I'm putting together a presentation, and need the following:

(1) Each of 4 slides contains an audio clip that begins playing when the
slide shows, and at the end of the audio clip, the presentation
automatically forwards to the next slide (and starts the next audio clip)

(2) Within each slide, I need to (simultaneously with the start of the
audio) begin a series of timed animations, e.g. several text boxes
dissolving into view at approximately 5-6 second intervals. The appearance
of the text boxes does /not/ have to be synchronized with specific sections
of the audio

What I've done so far (and then, where I'm stuck):
* I set slide transitions at 5 sceonds (shorter than the audio clip)
* I used Insert/Sound/From File to embed my audio (.wav files)
* I set the multimedia settings to "pause slideshow until clip is finished",
which was how I achieved a seamless transition between the slides...but that
is what is keeping my other animation from happening... so....

What is the "best" way to set this up?
Thanks!
Keith

I'm using 2000 to put the presentation together, although it would be highly
desirable to be backward compatible to 97, since I don't know which PC this
presentation will be run from.

PPT 2000 is compatible with PPT 97 for all intents and purposes, so you shouldn't worry too much about that. Just know that the "hide after mouse click" is different in the two versions, and PPT 97 won't run animated GIFs. And avoid picture bullets and numbered lists if you're concerned about how it looks in 97.

Other than that, you won't have problems. No need to "backsave" to a different format or anything like that -- in fact, that will probably cause you more issues than the minor differences between PPT 97 and 2000.

Re your specific issues with sound, etc.:

(1) Each of 4 slides contains an audio clip that begins playing when the
slide shows, and at the end of the audio clip, the presentation
automatically forwards to the next slide (and starts the next audio

clip)

(2) Within each slide, I need to (simultaneously with the start of the
audio) begin a series of timed animations, e.g. several text boxes
dissolving into view at approximately 5-6 second intervals. The

appearance
of the text boxes does /not/ have to be synchronized with specific

sections
of the audio

Using "pause show" is a good way to ensure your transitions here, yes, but as you've found, this prevents the animations. So you need to use the "continue slide show" setting for the sound file and then adjust your transition times accordingly.

One thing that might help is to create an autoshape, drag it off the edge of the slide where it won't show during the slide show, and give it an animation setting to happen "after previous." Of course, make it the last thing to happen in the list of animations.

Hopefully that will take care of the problem.
