Default can't see any styles... weird

ok this is really weird.
As a huge advocate of using styles with msword, I understand how I am
supposed to see them. However I can't. I have the sidebar window open
with styles and formatting open... and its blank. I have the
formatting toolbar open and can see the default styles there but
cannot edit them . Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3 and Normal. I can't
get to any of the styles for some reason.
Can anyone give a tip to this?
