Default How Do Remotes for Advancing Powerpoint Slides Work?

I've seen a few USB remote controllers now for advancing
ppt slides in a slideshow.

What gets sent through the USB port to cause a powerpoint slide show
to advance a slide (or go back a slide)? What commands need to
be sent, and how does this work? Is this documented anywhere?
How can I learn about how these are implemented?
Thanks!

The USB device is probably emulating a keyboard or a mouse, then sending either
N/P keystrokes or left/right clicks.

Try googling "USB Dick Grier" for some leads to follow
