Default PowerPoint viewer

I have Powerpoint 2003 viewer that I downloaded to be able
to view .pps files recd by email. I find that I cannot
open the attachment in the Outlook Express mail as I can
do with other attachments e.g. .jpg etc., but must save
the pps file in my documents folder where it can then be
opened. The error msg when I try to open in OE is that I
need to associate that kind of file. I cannot accomplish
this...doesn't recognize the path etc. What am I doing
wrong. I have successfully associated file formats before.
OS is XP.

Try this:
1. Open Windows Explorer and click onTools . Folder Options
2. Click on File Types tab
3. Click New and add PPS and click OK
4. Now locate PPS in the list of Registered file types and select it.
5. Click on Change and select a program. You'll want to browse to and select
pptview.exe
6. Then click on Advanced and add an action - - Show - - and set it as the
defaulT.
7. OK your way out.

Now try to open an email attachment that has an extension of PPS.

So far has not worked. Does the fact that I do not have
MS Office make any difference ?

Yes the action list has "open" only on it.
click the attachment in the email and you are asked if you
want to open this file. yes......powerpoint starts to
open and then a series of messages:
"PPviewer cannot find the 'Documents'" clicking OK then :
" " " " " file 'and' " " :
" 'local'
" 'temporary'
" internet
name of the file
(1) pps
The file can still be opened by saving to my documents and
then doing a start - microsoft powerpoint viewer 2003
icon -select the file in the documents folder

Well, the Viewer is apparently not able to find the file in your temp folder
because it is parsing the path with each space encountered. I guess you'll just
have to do a save to your hard drive and open from there. You should be able to
right click it and select "Show" from the menu, if you followed the steps I gave
you. Otherwise you'll need to open the Viewer and then open the file from the
dialog.

Sonia: I appreciate your attempt to help. Right click
only offers open, print, save as, save all. I'm not sure
that file is in the temp internet (I can't locate it). I
was wondering if the proble, had anything to do with the "
"%1" which has been present on and off during my efforts
to make this work. Also I noted that sometimes "
preceeded C:\Program Files\ msoffice\powerpoint
viewer\pptview.exe and sometimes followed. The same
changes noted with the "%1" which has sometimes followed
that path. DDE has generally been checked. Several times
I was aware of error indications about the path
formulation (or something). I had suspected that d/l of
the viewer without having MS Office had something to do
with the limitation I have encountered. If you get any
more ideas I'll appreciate hearing them. Meanwhile it
looks like I have to save to My documents folder and then
start the viewer. Thanks again.

Sonia: Why should I be able to simply click .jpg and
similar attached files and have them open and yet unable
to do this with the .pps files. It's way past my bedtime
here in mid-america so I'm off. I will try to check (if I
can find this ) tomorrow. Thanks again for your efforts.

Unhappy

its a very old entry, but is there any solution available now?
I have the same problem and wasted a long time for troubleshooting.
I fixed it temporarily by using the old 97 version of pptview.
