Default excel macro? expiration reminders

I am writing this for a friend. He works in the business office of a
real estate company. He has a spreadsheet that contains listings and
their expiration dates, and wants to be able to to have excel remind
him so many days before the listing expires (and up to so many after in
case he is not working the day a listing expires so it can remind him
later). Is there a way, perhaps a macro that pops up a window to
remind, or some way to do this? Hopefully this is enough info but can
provide more if necessary.

Hi KB,

Although not too familiar with this function I believe
conditional formatting should do the job for him. i.e.
change the cell color to an alert color.
