Default Access currency field wont format correctly in word mail merge

I have a currency field in an Access 2003 database which when merged as a
mergefield in word will not format properly. The £ sign is not imported,
neither is the decimal point or any decimal characters if the value is 0
(zero).

Help it was easy in Access 2000!!!
