Default convert shape to a connector

Is there a way to convert a shape into a connector, ie. add connector start
and end points and handles to a shape?

you might consider using the connection point tool on the toolbar (sometimes
hidden under the connector tool).

Yes, you can turn a 1-D line into a connector. Select the line and choose
Window Show Shapesheet. Find the Miscellaneous section and then set the
ObjType cell to 2. This tells Visio to treat the shape as a routable
connector.

If you have a 2-D shape, you need to go to Format Behavior and set the
Interaction Style to 1-D. Making a 2-D shape behave both as 1-D and
routable will not preserve much of the original geometry however.
