Default Problem sending email through outlook 2002 using Comcast Broadband

I have been using Outlook as my email client and Comcast has been my ISP
(broadband) without any problems.

Lately (few days back), I started getting errors when trying to send emails
(smtp). I do no have this problem receiving any emails (pop3).

When I contacted Comcast support, they tried to resolve it for 10 minutes
and then
informed me that they do not officially support Outlook (sic) and asked me
to use their web email. That works fine. But I need to use Outlook, so that I
can check back my old emails offline.

Does anyone know if this is some kind of gimmick played by the ISPs.

Thanks.

Peter.

As a general rule ISP's support OE not OL, its because OL is more than just
an email app.
The OL mail settings are broadly the same as in OE.
Comcast may have info on their web site re how to setup OE, just ignore ref
to OE
What err msgs do you get?
Tried an OL repair?

Thanks for the reply.

Infact Comcast has detailed instructions for Outlook 2002.
I tried setting up email account again. Funny thing is I
can get emails. But I cannot send emails. If there was
something wrong, then I shoould not be even getting
emails.

I will try and post the exact error message this evening,
once I reach home.

The usual cause of this is failure to authenticate to the outgoing server.

Not true. Since you can specify different accounts for the incoming (POP)
server and the outgoing (SMTP) server, it's quite easy to get one correct
and screw up the other. Then, you'll either be able to receive but not send
or send but no receive.

The error message is

************** start of message **************

Task 'mail.comcast.net - Sending' reported error
(0x800CCC78) : 'Unable to send the message. Please verify
the e-mail address in your account properties. The server
responded: 530 Authentication required'

************** end of message **************

I was never having this kind of problem earlier and I had
not made any changes to the email account configuration
till yesterday.

I started getting this error 5 days back.

Are the ISPs' doing something with SMTP.

I tried to test the email account and the results of the
test are below :

Establish network connection - Completed
Find outgoing mail server (SMTP) - Completed
Find incomming mail server (POP3) - Completed
Log onto incomming mail server (POP3) - Completed
Send test e-mail message - Failed.

Error displayed

"Send test e-mail message: Unable to send test Message.
Please verify the E-mail Address field."

Any ideas what is going on.

Thanks.

Thanks Brian.

I selected the following :

- My outgoing server (SMTP) require authentication

- Use same setting as my incomming mail server.

But I am still getting the same error.

I then tried setting up Outlook Express 6.0 and it works
fine with POP3 & SMTP.

Still not sure why Outlook 2002 is giving me problems now
after working faithfully for 2 years.
