Default Blank Excel Cells printing as Zeros in Word mail merge document

I am trying to import a mailmerge with rows of information that are not all
the same length. On the shorter rows, zeros show up on the document in cells
(not all) that are empty where the row above and/or below are populated. How
do I prevent this from happening??

see http://tips.pjmsn.me.uk/t0003.htm . The DDE option mentioned there
may help.
