Can I change just one row in a query depending on a check box.

If the check box for a record is true Is it possible to change the font
colour to red just for that one row/record

Access 97

As far as I know, it is not possible at all in Access 97.

In later versions, you can use conditional formatting on a continuous form.
You cannot use conditional formatting directly on a row of data in datasheet
view of a query.
