Office has three editions available for Mac but there's no Publisher for
Mac. http://www.microsoft.com/mac/product...uy/compare.htm -- JoAnn Paules Microsoft MVP - Publisher How to ask a question http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555375 "redheadedpamela" wrote in message ... thank god and greyhound the glitch is gone. finally my combo cd/dvd started working, instead of just spinning, and it read both MS Office CDs and reinstalled them. I guess those cds might be in pretty bad shape after 7 years. I think this is my last Dell also. It's an Aug 04 purchase Inspiron 8600, pretty top for the time, but is 2 and a half to 3 years all you get now? What brand do you people in the know prefer? Thanks to all for listening to me rant, and for all your suggestions. I have a much cleaner computer now. I'll be doing some serious backup data burning. Looks like I dodged a bullet. Can you run MS Office on a MAC? thanks, pam "Steve in NC" wrote in message link.net... redheadedpamela wrote: I still cannot paste pub to pub. I used disk #2 (where Publisher is) and re-installed MS Office 2000. I still cannot copy and paste from one .pub to another .pub. Any more suggestions? Everyone has been so kind, and I'm sure I've cleaned up a lot of junk off my computer as a result of this, but so far, no luck with MS Publisher 2000. Thanks, Pam Sorry if I've just jumped in mid-stream again but if I have two instances of PUB open on my two monitors with different pubs on each, I can drag an article/story into the other, as long as the "normal" stuff is the same, it just transfers over... but then I don't know what I'm typing about "Ed Bennett" wrote in message ... redheadedpamela wrote: (Received via email) Yes, I see what you're saying. But why did all the icons change to the new one? Because the file association changed from Publisher 2000 to Publisher 2007 Trial. The icon isn't stored with the file, it's assigned it by Windows on the basis of the file extension. All Publisher files end in .pub, and installing the trial associated Publisher 2007 Trial with .pub files, and hence the associated icon with such files. You can create a blank text file and rename it to have a .pub extension - it will get a Publisher icon, but that doesn't make it a Publisher file. -- Ed Bennett - MVP Microsoft Publisher http://ed.mvps.org |

Thanks for all the info, Ed.
You said "Take a backup copy to new media." Do you mind explaining this in more detail for me? I would certainly appreciate it, because I don't know what that means. Does it mean I can copy the MS Office 2000 CDs, and burn me a new one? Or do I back up Office 2000 on my hard drive (which I also don't know how to do), and then burn a new CD? Pam "Ed Bennett" wrote in message ... redheadedpamela wrote: I guess those cds might be in pretty bad shape after 7 years. Take a backup copy to new media - that should fix any disk read errors (although unrecoverable data will not magically be recovered, at least you may be able to use them properly). I think this is my last Dell also. It's an Aug 04 purchase Inspiron 8600, pretty top for the time, but is 2 and a half to 3 years all you get now? Depends on what you pay. Inspirons are generally made from cheaper (hence lower-quality) components - that's why they cost less than the business machines (Latitudes?) for equivalent specifications. I've found laptop components to not be as durable as desktop components, too - possibly due to the additional wear-and-tear a laptop gets. What brand do you people in the know prefer? For desktops, I roll my own. For laptops, I use Novatech, which are a small UK vendor who (for notebooks) rebadge generic machines from various manufacturers. The warranty support is really quite good, although I'd have preferred it if I hadn't needed to use it. If I were in the market for a high-performance/high-spec machine, I'd go with an Acer Ferrari. Everyone who's used one loves it, but I just can't afford it. Can you run MS Office on a MAC? Two different answers: - There is an Office:Mac, which contains Word, Excel, Entourage (like Outlook) and PowerPoint. No Publisher, Access, etc. - New Macs these days (for over a year now, I think) use Intel x86-compatible processors rather than the PowerPC processors that were used previously. That means you can run Windows on a Mac (using Apple's shiny easy-to-use dual boot technology known as Boot Camp), and run Office for Windows on that. If you can, I'd wait until Mac OS 10.5 is released before buying a Mac (expected October, I think). -- Ed Bennett - MVP Microsoft Publisher http://ed.mvps.org |

Stick the CD in the drive (if you have two drives and only one is writeable, use the non-writeable one unless you experience problems), start your CD burning software, tell it to copy it. (Insert a blank CD when prompted - when you do this depends on how many drives you have.) Obviously this does require a CD writer. -- Ed Bennett - MVP Microsoft Publisher http://ed.mvps.org |
