Can't Open Files or Load Access on New PC
Hi!
Recently got a new PC and am having the following problems with Office 97 Professional: Issue 1: I backed up the document files on the old pc and began restoring them to the new pc. The old pc had a goofy file structure due to the less than impressive service we had received at a retail store a couple of years ago. So upon restoring the files to the new pc, it maintained the old file structure. So I thought, I'll create the file/folder system I want and then just copy the folders into it from one location to the other on the new PC. It allowed me to copy the folders and files but now I can't open any of the Word, Excel, Powerpoint files (and probably Access files too but see below). I can open other files such as Corel Draw and Corel Photopaint. It won't let me delete the Office files either. So I tried to copy them back to the old file structure to delete them but it wouldn't allow that. The message I get when trying to open any of the MS Office files is that the folder/file "isn't available." "The folder may be located on an unavailable volume or protected by a password." I've never used a password so that isn't the issue. These are all in C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\My Documents. Do you know of any way to get at these so that I can at least delete them? I was able to simply copy the files from the old PC to a CD and then copy them into another location on the new PC so that I can use the files I need. But I don't want duplicate copies of old files hanging around. I want a nice, neat hard drive! Issue 2: Also, I can't open Access. I installed MS Office from the original CD and everything else opens fine. It says that Access can't find the file, VBA332.dll. I found the file on the installation CD and put it in the MS Common Files where it is on the old PC but then I get an error message. I've reinstalled Office and it didn't correct the problem. Not sure what else to try. This PC came with a 60-day trial newer version of MS Office (we have Office 97) on it. Might that have some effect on the way the older version behaves? Thanks! barbaraeh |

For issue 1, disable the Office Plugin that comes with Symantec/Norton
AntiVirus. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" for more information. For issue 2, please quote the error message in its entirety EXACTLY as it appears on the screen. barbaraeh wrote: Hi! Hi, I'll try the Norton antivirus suggestion...thanks! Also, someone told
me that the problem might be related to the fact that this PC came with a trial Office version on it that may be interfering with Office 97 in some way. Is the Norton issue the more likely problem? I'll certainly go right now and try the Norton suggestion first. For the Access problem, the message reads: "Microsoft Access can't find the Visual Basic for Applications dynamic-link libraray (DLL) Vba332. Rerun the Microsoft Access setup software." I did rerun the setup and it didn't change anything. So, then I tried copying the file VBA332.dll to the shared folders which didn't work either. Thanks! Hi, barbaraeh.
The "file not available" problem is most likely due to the Norton Office Plugin. The only reference I can find to the Access error message you cited is http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=164097 "ACC97: Reinstalling 'Run From CD' Removes Microsoft Access Components". Microsoft recommends that when installing multiple Office versions on a computer, older versions should be installed before newer versions. You might want to post a separate question in the Access newsgroup at http://www.microsoft.com/office/comm....setupconfi g where someone more familiar than I am with Access might be able to offer a better suggestion. barbaraeh wrote: Hi, I'll try the Norton antivirus suggestion...thanks! Hi again. Yes, I still get the "file/folder not available" message. I am

Search for the OFFICEAV.DLL file on your hard drive (include hidden and
system files/folders in the search options). If you find it, note the directory path where it is located. Close all open applications. From Windows, click on Start | Run. In the Open dialog box, type the command (including quotes): regsvr32 -U "C:\path\OFFICEAV.DLL" but replace path with the directory path for your OfficeAV.dll file. Click on OK. You only have to run this command once (not every time you restart your computer). You should get the message: "DllUnregisterServer in C:\path\OfficeAV.dll succeeded." Reboot the computer. Does the problem persist? barbaraeh wrote: Hi again. Yes, I still get the "file/folder not available" message. I am using Norton Systemworks 2004, version 7.02, build 211. but instead of "succeeded" it said "failed". It also gave a return code of 0x8002801c if that is significant. So I still have the same problems. Thanks! Thanks! See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" for more information. For issue 2, please quote the error message in its entirety EXACTLY as it appears on the screen. barbaraeh wrote: Hi! Thanks! barbaraeh |

I am having the same problem; Garfield-n-odie asked you about Symantec
Corporate Edition, which I have... Garfield, why is this significant???? barbaraeh wrote: I tried the solution below but it didn't work. I got the message you stated but instead of "succeeded" it said "failed". It also gave a return code of 0x8002801c if that is significant. So I still have the same problems. Thanks! It states nothing about Corporate Edition on the "About" screen. Thanks! "garfield-n-odie" wrote: Do you still get the "file not available" error message? I also post the Access question in the Access newsgroup. Thanks for such a prompt response! "garfield-n-odie" wrote: Hi, barbaraeh.
