Default TOC page numbers show one number only

I have created a TOC but everytime the document is closed and opened again,
the page numbers show one number (e.g. all page numbers are "3"). You have to
update it again. How can I stop this from happening?

You don't say what version of Word you are using, the following is for 2003
and prior, for 2007 hopefully these instructions will pont the way to a
solution.
Two operations to hopefully correct this.
1. Tools, Options, General tab, uncheck the "Allow starting in Reading
Layout".
2. Format, Columns, select "One" in the Presets (even if it already
selected), OK.

You TOC should know be OK. Save the file, this should confirm the changes
for next time.
Hope this helps

The usual reason for this is opening in Reading Layout view, which happens
only when you open an email attachment directly instead of saving to the HD
first. There are three possible workarounds:

1. Save the attachment to the hard drive before opening.

2. Clear the box for "Allow starting in Reading Layout view" on the General
tab of Tools | Options.

3. Open the attachment in Reading Layout view, switch to another view, and
F9 to update the TOC.

Note that all of these methods work only on your own computer. If you are
sending the document to someone else, there is nothing you can do to prevent
the behavior on the recipient's computer except suggest one of the three
methods above.
