Default Normal style in shared documents

We share documents in our production work. These documents go to clients for
reveiw and come back to us. We have a customized template, but so far, for
style we simply use Normal, with a corporate standard of Arial, 11 pt. I'm
about to make a pitch for creating a "template_normal" style so that we
won't run inot problems when sharing with clients - but can anyone tell me
for sure how Word deals with the normal style? when shared across docs with
attached customised template?

Doesn't the document's "normal style" travel with it no matter what the
client has? Or what are the rules for this? I'd love to be able to back up
my pitch with information about this.. so far I've found "Bend Word to your
Will" which says we shouldnt' depand on normal... but I'd love to know
more.. my pitch is to our awesome systems engineer who has made a very
automatic shell for our work.

Thanks.

All styles in the document, including the normal style, travel with the
document.

However, if under Tools = Templates and Add-Ins you have the option checked
to update styles from the template, then they will. This should seldom (if
ever) be checked.

For more on styles, take a look at
http://addbalance.com/usersguide/styles.htm. For more on the different kinds
of templates and locations of templates folders see
http://addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm.

Default Normal style in shared documents

I totally understand your question. I have developed
customized style templates for specific documentation
within our company and once the templates are attached to
the documents, they look really good. But whenever
someone within our company accesses the document via our
network, or if I e-mail the document to someone, the
customized styles do not appear when the document is
opened. The styles seem to default to the normal.dot that
the person opening the document has on their hard drive.
I'm taking a free on-line advanced MSWord class offered by
HP, and no one, including the instructor, can answer this
question.

So all the issues with document fonts changing are because the file that is
being passed "knows" that has "update styles" checked?

I thought so, but needed to make sure.

Thanks

That is correct. You can uncheck it in the document before you pass it on.
