Default DATE AND NUMBER FORMAT WRONG

I HAVE WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION 7.0 WHEN I MAIL MERGE FROM
MY DATABASE INTO A WORD PROCESSOR DOCUMENT IT CHANGES THE
FORMAT ON THE DATE AND NUMBER. EXAMPLE: THE DATABASE
READS: SEPTEMBER 22, 2004, THE DOCUMENT SHOWS: 9/22/2004.
THE DATABASE READS: $71.00, THE DOCUMENT SHOWS: 71

PLEASE HELP!!!!!

DON'T SHOUT!!

Word is expected to provide the formatting, so you can do this with switches
on the fields - see http://www.gmayor.com/formatting_word_fields.htm

for the date the switch would be \@ "MMMM d, yyyy"
for the currency \# ",$0.00"
