Cannot solve Outlook error: "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persist, restart Outlook."
I am having problems performing several task in Outlook. Emails are sending
but remain in the outbox and resend again and again. When I try to delete emails from the outbox, I get the following error: "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persist, restart Outlook." I found a KB article that refers to installing an update to solve this problem. When installing the update found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300551/EN-US/, it ends with a failure error. I have also gone to the Office Update site and downloaded and installed all updates without any errors. Still the problem persist. I then tried Detect and Repair. I tried to re-install Office. I uninstalled and re-installed Office. Still the problem persist. I tried creating a new PST file thinking the other might be corrupted, still the problem persist. Does anyone know how to solve this error in Outlook 2002? "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persist, restart Outlook." Thanks! |

In my case, the problem was that the update I mentioned had not been installed prior to this problem occurring which occurred after exceeding a PST file over 1.8gb in size. To cure the problem I did the following: I went to the folder that outlook.pst was located in under Documents and Settings. Renamed outlook.pst to old.pst. Open up Outlook and it will give you an error indicating that outlook.pst is missing and then gives you a chance to create a new one. I then closed Outlook and installed the update found at http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2002/olk1004.aspx. Don't be concerned if after starting the update, it sits there doing nothing for about 20 or 30 seconds as it did in my case. Wait until you get a confirmation that the update processed normally. Once finished there, I then opened Outlook again and went to Import & Export, chose Import from another program or file, hit next, then chose Personal Folders (.pst), hit next and then told it to import my Inbox. After it imported my Inbox, I then repeated the process and imported my Contacts. Continue repeating the process until everything was imported except for my Deleted Items and Sent Items. The Deleted Items I didn't care about but I then opened up my Archive.pst file and imported my Sent Items into it so that I had them to refer to later. It is a good idea that you use the Auto Archive process so that your PST file gets so large. I have mine set to Auto Archive every 30 days on everything that is 6 months old or older. |

I am experiencing the same symptons and have reinstalled/patched etc and the symptoms remain. My pst file size is 1820046k so I will try what you suggest and report back. "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persist, restart Outlook." it is one of the most common error received by outlook users and this usually states of corruption issue with the concerned file, but in cases other than, oversized pst file may also gives rise to the issue. This is since you are not only unable to add files to it, but the files could not even be deleted. First try and scan the pst with scanpst.exe, if it does not help try using pst splitter tool.
