This seems to work for me, where the lookup value is in A2 and the lookup
column is in A1. Change A1 and it selects a different column to return.

=VLOOKUP(A2,D1:G3,A1,0)

In certain cases, which escapes me now, you may have to use INDIRECT(A1) to
make it work.

I am not understanding the layout and what you are trying to do.

If you want, send me an example workbook with detailed instructions of what
you want to happen.

Maybe you don't want the column index to be a number. Maybe you're asking how
do you match text in a title (topmost) row (like matching the text in the title
(leftmost) column.

If that's the case, =index(match(),match()) may work for you:

(especially examples 2 and 3.)

Read Debra's site. It looks like those examples are a perfect fit.
