Default creating a subtraction expression in a word table

Does anyone know how to create a subraction calculation in a table... I have no trouble with addition... but can't seem to make subtraction work...

Specifically I want to subtract cell k18 from k17 - how do I write it
I've tried =k18-k17

this doesn't work
