Default date and time check button problem

In a table using access 2002 I set the format of a column
to date and time.
I next create a check button in my switchboard form with
on click as =Date()
When I click on it I get the date. When I remove the check I
get the time.
Is there away to format it or do something that when I
remove the check I get a blank in the cell?
