Default Date Format

I have a spreadsheet with several hundred dates in
diffferect cells. The dates are typed in as "01/01/2003"
but show up in the spreadsheet as a five digit number.
The cell format is date and is not locked or protected.
How do I get them to show up as they are typed in? Thanks!

Excel carrys the date as a number, to see it as a date
format the cell(s) as dates.

Select the column with the dates, use the format menu at
the top of the screen, select the cells option and the
date cateory.
