Default Document name or path is not valid - SOLUTION

I see ALOT of traffic around the "word document won't open" issue with
the message:

The document name or path is not valid.
Try one or more of the following
- Check the path and make sure it was typed correctly.
- On the file menu, click Open. Search for the file using the dialog
box.

THIS WORKED FOR ME (WinXP and Word 2002):

From Word, use File Open and select document
Instead of clicking "Open" button, use the drop down beside the Open
button and select "Open and Repair".

(After alot of searching and trying everything else suggested, this
worked and saved me a tremendous amount of rework!) Hope it helps.
